We had the pleasure of having Ryan speak to our Loan Officers in our Mastermind meeting on Friday. Ryan’s words and personal journey left a lasting impact on all of us, inspiring us to rise about challenges and embrace the limitless potential within ourselves. Since he spoke, I have felt myself constantly asking “why not me” and “why not more”. What struck me most about his story was his unwavering belief in the determination and the boundless capacity for growth and change. He showcased the profound impact that a positive mindset, unwavering determination, and an unyielding commitment to personal growth can have on one’s life. Ryan’s journey was a testament to the fact that no matter how dire the circumstances may be, there is always a chance to rise about other people’s expectations and rise above adversity.
Temple Shir Tikva’s “Judaism Through Baseball” event with Jonathan Mayo and Ryan Lavarnway was a gift of riveting, uplifting, and at times hilarious story-sharing at a moment when celebrating visible, proud, Jewish identity felt especially resonant to our intergenerational audience. And it was indeed a celebration – of Jonathan and Ryan’s love of the game, of their deep connection to Israel, of their friendship which was formed through Team Israel’s participation in the World Classic, and of the powerful and often surprising ways in which their day-jobs in sports align with their Jewish values, ethics, heritage, and community.

We were excited to have Ryan visit with the children in our Religious School and decided that from K-6 they would all have an opportunity to hear him speak. It was wonderful to see the way in which Ryan was able to engage with children of all ages; each time he found a way to make his story appropriate for the children in the room and he encouraged an atmosphere where they felt comfortable to ask questions and dig deeper into the lessons being taught. There is a warmth about Ryan that children and adults felt, and his compelling story is one that can inspire people across generations.
Ryan has so many interesting stories and such meaty content. He is charming and has a likeable delivery. I took 5 pages of notes!
Ryan did great! My biggest take away was when he talked about getting “fired” from a job- talking about being traded 26 times – never giving up!
As you know, my kids are baseball OBSESSED. They had the opportunity to meet Ryan during our last CCM Trunk or Treat event and thought it was so cool to meet a MLB player. We talk often about how rare it is to get into the major leagues and the amount of work and dedication that goes into it. I had them watch Ryan’s video today to exemplify the grit and persistence that goes into pursuing your goal. Their mouth dropped when they heard how many times he’s had to move around the country and start new with different teams and organizations. The resounding message here that not only my diehard baseball kids took away but that I also am walking away with, is that you have to rely on your F’s with each new opportunity. I connected with his “Why Not” mentality and think it’s an easy way to remember the basics of what goes into achieving your goals. I really enjoyed Ryan’s message and think he did a phenomenal job!
